What is counselling?
Counselling may involve the counsellor being, at times, a guide, a coach, and a support for you in the exploration, management and resolution of the issues that you bring to the sessions.
What is psychotherapy?
In psychotherapy, (or therapy for short) the issues you bring to the sessions become the spring board. The goal is not just the resolution of the current issues but personal growth through the untying of emotional knots. The process involves the exploration of the thoughts, emotions and motivations, those on and under the surface. Of particular importance to the process is the examination of patterns of relating and quality of relationships.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Different practitioners have different views as to what constitutes counselling and what constitutes psychotherapy. Counselling is more often short-term. Counselling more often focuses on managing one's responses to the current stresses or the events occurring in your life. Counselling is more appropriate in times of crisis, such as when going through a separation or divorce and when major decisions are required.
Psychotherapy is usually a longer term and deeper process. Like counselling, psychotherapy also seeks to manage one's responses to the current issues. However, psychotherapy goes beyond that and looks at how the current events fit into one's life pattern to date.
Psychotherapy is more often suited to work with children, adolescence and couples where the language of emotion provides insight into important underlying themes.
